Creating GREAT Fuzz Effects Pedal Sounds :

1.) Guitar pickup modules : Generally, a single-coil bridge pickup will help to achieve the best sonic results. Otherwise, double-coil pickups tend to over-power the signal, resulting in an overly “fat” sound. Nonetheless, I have personally discovered that particular fuzz effects pedals in my collection do respond well with either type of pickup. That said, Step # 1 is to initially maximize both the guitar’s volume and tone levels. After having completed the following steps, 2-5, gradually reduce said levels to personal preference (if necessary).

2.) An over-driven TONE arriving from the guitar amplifier is necessary to blend together the sound of a fuzz effects pedal. Alternatively, if your amp is solely designed to produce a clean/ linear voice, then consider placing an overdrive effects unit within the signal chain (in-line) before a fuzz effects pedal. That way, the fuzz unit will receive proper signal strength via the over-driven sound; thus, preventing a weak-sounding effect. Moreover, expect to allow for re-adjustment of the overdrive unit’s control features (i.e., volume and gain levels) after having initially set the volume and gain of the fuzz unit—ultimately, re-shaping the overall sonic character to your personal preference.

3.) Equalizer effects pedal : Providing additional tone-shaping possibilities (choosing to either, increase or decrease audio frequencies). That said, experiment with its physical placement within order of sequence (either, before or after the fuzz unit).

4.) Noise gate + compressor effects pedals : Gate : Filters out white noise (the sound of hiss). Compressor : Provides a uniform dB level for all guitar strings—ultimately, creating a smooth sonic character, as well as longer sustain of musical notes. For best results, placement of these particular sound processors should be next in line of the aforementioned EQ and fuzz—with the gate placed last in sequence.

5.) Reverb and/ or delay effects pedal(s) : Ideally, patched into the effects loop (if provided) of a guitar amplifier. FX loop? Yes. Thus, preventing these particular effects from becoming distorted via the aforementioned fuzz unit—also . . in that, you are not incorporating gain (distortion) effects into said loop.

To the average “fuzz” aficionado, what’s been mentioned herein, must seem rather involved. As you realize by reading this post, such is NOT merely twiddling knobs on effects pedals. Rather . . such is to show how sonic experimentation—along with patience—is obviously, required to produce successful results.
