Hello..

My name is Michael, and I am an independent music producer of my own original material. Relatively, I also own a considerable independent collection of TONE-worthy effects pedals—many of which, are potentially collectible as well. These two factors are the main focus of this website; ultimately, intended to help provide a practical reference of information for my readers. Otherwise, I built and designed this site with the help of many reputable people and companies. For details, click here.

NOTE : This website provides BIASED opinions. Please, do your own research.

Here, I want to share what I’ve gained as musical knowledge in relation to personal recording techniques. As well, virtually sharing with fellow musicians, collectors and enthusiasts my independent collection of effects units; which is comprised of a general variety of types—including, but not limited to..

* Fuzz
* Overdrive
* Boost
* Compression
* Echo/ Delay
* Phase-Shift/ Uni-Vibe
* Wah-Wah

Music Production :

This site includes a Blog section, which (in part) details my engineering/ production techniques. For example, all videos I provide have initially been converted from self-produced audio recordings. Provided below is my YouTube video, featuring the Roger Mayer Page-1 effects pedal (limited-edition/ 40th Anniversary model).

Musician credits also belong to me :

* Guitar
* Bass Guitar

In regard to this particular video soundtrack, the “drums” are via the Line 6 JM4 Looper effects pedal. Otherwise, the signal-chain order for my guitar & bass TONES are as follows :

In order of sequence/ guitar signal-chain :

* Fender Telecaster (’52 reissue)
* Ernie Ball 2223 Super Slinky guitar strings
* Mogami audio cables
* Dunlop Cry Baby Classic (model GCB95F/ Fasel inductor)
* Roger Mayer Page-1 (40th Anniversary edition)
* Origin Effects Cali76 Limiting Amplifier (“compressor”)
* BOSS GE-7 Equalizer
* TC Electronic Sentry Noise Gate

FX Loop :

* MXR M-117 Flanger (v.1 reissue)

* Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man (v.1 reissue)

Modeling Processor :

* Line 6 POD HD Pro (v.1)
(personal program preset, based on a ’72 Marshall 50w Super Lead amplifier + ’64 Fender Deluxe Reverb speaker cabinet)

In order of sequence/ bass guitar signal-chain :

* Fender Vintage-Modified Jazz Bass
* Fender Flatwound bass strings
* Mogami audio cables

Modeling Processor :

* Line 6 Bass POD (v.1)

(personal program preset, based on a ’65 Vox AC-100 amplifier)

In order of sequence/ “drums” signal-chain :

* Line 6 JM4 Looper effects pedal (drum loop, only)
* Mogami audio cables
* Origin Effects Cali76 Limiters (2x orig. units/ stereo pair)
* BOSS GEB-7 Equalizers (2x units/ stereo pair)

Roger Mayer : Page-1

Roger Mayer Page-1
40th Anniversary Ltd. Edition

2004, Roger Mayer Analogue Effects releases a (Ltd./ 40th Anniversary) effects pedal, which most aficionados of FUZZ were quite eager to own—especially, regarding fans of Jimmy Page (e.g. guitarist of both, The Yardbirds & Led Zeppelin fame). Since 1961, Page has collaborated with an electronics engineer named, Roger Mayer—whom also, collaborated with Jimi Hendrix in a like-manner (e.g. modifying/ building circuits, with intention toward sound improvement). 1970s, Mayer essentially shifts focus toward pro-audio equipment as well. Thus.. having upgraded many major recording facilities to include his own, custom/ modified sound processors AND recording consoles.

What exactly, the Roger Mayer Page-1 effects pedal represents is vintage (1964) TONE—specifically, FUZZ. And if you’re wondering if its circuit is a variant of the Gibson/ Maestro Fuzz-Tone, then the answer is NO—e.g. different transistors, etc. Ultimately, its sound is unique; initially HAND-CRAFTED for Jimmy Page to produce longer-sustain as an overall improvement. Again.. reissued (2004), such has been further-refined to include a particular control feature labeled, “Fatness”—which essentially thickens the sound, if necessary; especially for single-coil guitar pickups (bridge/ lead-position).

I LOVE this pedal : ) Ultimately, I employ a fuzz effects pedal as input to an OVERDRIVEN, vintage-style guitar “amplifier”—e.g. the SOUND of a Marshall MkII (personally modified, via modeling technology). ESSENTIALLY, such in the manner of my guitar heroes, regarding British Psychedelic Rock. The goal herein, is NOT to produce ultra-refined sonics. Rather, that of intentional imperfection—e.g. “SUPA” RICH in gain (square-wave distortion), which has an inherent charm about it (IMO); especially, for guitar solos.

Nonetheless.. I further-ENHANCE fuzz effect sounds via additional effects pedals : Compressor > Equalizer > Noise Gate, Delay—each (minus Delay), placed in-line to the guitar “amplifier’s” main input. Delay, placed in “amp’s” Effects Loop; so as to remain clean-sounding/ UNeffected by gain effects (e.g. Boost, Overdrive, Distortion, Fuzz).

* Compressor, outputs guitar strings @ the same level, whilst also providing as much sustain as needed. Thus (in part), expect audio signal to have a smoother overall character as well. Connect this unit, immediately after Fuzz for a less-intense effect.

* Equalizer, increases/ decreases particular audio frequencies as needed. Connect this unit, immediately after Compressor. Otherwise, selected frequencies will be exaggerated/ overemphasized.

* Noise Gate, “blocks” unwanted noise from entering-into the audio signal. Connect this unit, LAST in-line to guitar amplifier’s main input.

* Echo/ Delay, creates a sonic illusion of distance/ depth/ potential “space-exploration”. Echo = 0-300 ms. Delay = 300+ ms. Ideally.. connect this unit, into the amp’s Effects Loop—if provided. This way, as to remain clean-sounding/ UNeffected by gain effects (e.g. Boost, Overdrive, Distortion, Fuzz).

Suggested audio playback : High-quality professional headphones (i.e., Sony MDR-7506), and a high-quality pro audio interface are preferred. This way, the listener will hear the intended results of my music production efforts—e.g. video soundtracks, etc.

NOTE : There may be a delay for the video to download from my YouTube channel. Please, wait !

This Website :

The intention of fuzz-effect-sounds-and-more.com is to provide a reference resource; virtually sharing my gear collection, so that readers are made greater-aware of particularly good-sounding (and, in some instances), potentially collectible effects pedals. Otherwise, to also help those whom might benefit from my recording/ engineering techniques. Ultimately, as I continue to build and design this site, I will gradually introduce additional collection-based content—such as blog posts, image galleries, audio, video, and official manufacturer web links for your convenience. The information provided herein, is based upon biased opinion. Please, do your own research.

Ebooks :

Later . . I will offer for sale Part 1 of a series of self-authored eBooks, in relation to fuzz effects pedals; subsequently, also offering additional volumes regarding other effects types—boost, overdrive, distortion, etc—all via my private, independent collection. Moreover, these “tomes of tone” will include audio examples, color images, (in most cases) close-up circuit views, and generalized spec. information. Otherwise, said eBooks regarding fuzz effects pedals will additionally incl. generalized historical information as well. For details, please read this site’s eBook advertisement page.
